What's wrong with a 2-speed E-Revo?
 

I see a lot of information about "locking" the Revo transmission for electric conversions. I feel like I'm missing something. Why not a 2-speed? Works out good on my nitro Revo.

Brushless Electrics do not necessarily need 2-speeds since they have all the torque and the rpm capability that Nitro does not have. Also, with the brutal power & torque of many brushless systems (a Neu Motor 1515 series produces 2+ hp) the simplicity of a single speed enhances the strength of the transmission considerably.

There's nothing "wrong" with it, but there are reasons to do so:

- BL has more than enough power to start the Revo going from a standstill with enough force to easily pull wheelies, spin tires, etc. Maybe the use of a smallish BL motor would be less stressed with a 2-speed.

- The construction of the transmission includes a one-way bearing on the first gear. This allows the shaft to spin faster than the first gear does when second gear is engaged by the centrifugal clutch. A side effect is that you cannot use motor braking or reverse because of the one-way-bearing. You can use a brake servos and use the stock setup, but you still don't get reverse. No biggie if it's not important to you. Plus, the addition of the brake servo and parts simply adds weight and complexity.

I find that when a trans shifts with an electric. It can get out of control quick.

OK, that all makes sense, but maybe I'm on the right track. Where I'll be racing, the twin Titan motors and 12 cells is the only legal setup for the monster truck class. Do you think that a 2-speed may be to my benefit being that I'm not running a high-power brushless setup?

I think you're better off with the stock emaxx transmission. get the half tranny conversion and, if you have an adjustable power supply, run the motors for about 30 minutes at 6 volts, Blow all the grease out of the bearings (all of them) and use a light oil, you have to maintain them more often but cuts the friction loss nearly in half. If the track is mid to long, get a 64 tooth spur gear to get a few more MPH

Bummer. It's too late to go with the Maxx transmission because of the chassis I ordered. OK then, has anyone found the most effective way to make the Revo trans a one-speed? Direct me to a thread if there is one.

Did you order the stock chassis? If so, it's just takes a little filing to get the Emaxx tranny to fit.

To convert the Revo tranny to single speed, just remove first gear (the one with the OWB on it) and then find a way to lock the centrifugal clutch to the second gear. That's it.

All you have to do is file some half-moon shapes into the clutch at three points so they match up with three of the holes in the gear and then screw in some 4mm screws.

I had no idea I was trail-blazing here. Just trying to throw together an MT that was race-legal (according to the rules of the local track). I will post pics as the parts arrive.

What chassis do you have that you can't modify for a maxx tranny? The Vantage CF? This would be a faaarrrrr easier way to go.

Putting 2 Titans onto a stock revo tranny is going to be a quite a trick...

A couple replies up, there's a link to the chassis. The one shown is a BL setup, but the builder assures me that he will make the stock Revo trans work with the dual Titans. Says he's done it before.

Yeah, Dan did do this before, i've seen some picks of it wandering around on the net; you happen to know what type of slipper is used on this conversion you ordered? looks like it's from the ofna mt?
