Radio Purchase decision time
 

Ok I need some advice here. I am going to purchase a multi model radio system. I have basically narrowed it down to wanting Spektrum recievers (mostly due to thier small size, and I think I like the DSM feature).
I found one vendor that has brand new DX-3 systems for 200 plus shipping, and at this time includes a second reciever along with the two servos (although I dont know if either of the servos would work on a revo or maxx).
On the other hand, someone locally has a JR R1 and a KO Mars for sale, to whick I could add the Spektrum Module and recievers. He claims that these are better radios, but I'm not sure why they would be. The cost of the KO an the JR would end up being more than just buying the new Spektrum (Module and two recievers would end up being over 200), so I'm leaning towards the Spektrum. I've never even seen a system used other than the stock systems, let alone used one, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've run the JR R-1 and making adjustments on it are a real pain. The DX-3 offers only 3 model memory and limited adjustments. I run a Futaba 3PK with Spektrum and I love it. 10+ model memory and more adjustments than you can shake a stick at. I've installed a 2600mah pack in it and it gives the radio a very nice weight to it.

Check ebay and some of the other forums for a used setup. I got my clean 3PK + spektrum module and 2 rxs for $300.

I use the JR XS3. It's pretty good. Very simple and effective. Can hold up to 6 models.

I'll toss in a recommendation for an Airtronics M11.

SO I started all this by looing for M8's or M11's, to use with the spektrum modules. They seem to be pretty high end for me, and I can get what I'm looking for quite a bit cheaper. My first priority was to just get the smallest reciver on my Revo that I could (Spektum), then I'd like multi model capability (I usually only have about 3-4 trucks running at any one time, if that). Any features beyond that are beyond my comprehension as to what they will provide me, mostly due to my lack of experiience, other than having the ability to have more model capacity.

Note that the newer version of the Spektrum DX3 has a 4 model memory, although many local places I've seen still have the old model.

For future reference; I got an extra receiver with mine and just the receiver was about $80. With comparison to the price of a full package set (transmitter, 2 receivers, 2 servos, odds and ends), I would have expected to pay about $50-$60 tops. Oh well, no one said this hobby was cheap.

If model memory is a consideration, I'd go for one of the Nomadio systems. It's said they can use the Spektrum receivers if tiny size is important. I've invested too much in my radio to justify switching just for more model memory...

I run a hitec agressor with a spektrum modul. I like it. It has alot of adjustments.

Maybe it'd be worth holding out for a little while until the Nomadio React is released? That thing has almost all the features of the Sensor, but with a $250-$300 pricetag. Should be an awesome radio...just a suggestion. :)

I say m8! i got one myself adn its aweseom. Its a much cheaper than some of the otehr higher end radios but still has most of teh same features. They go cheap, i beleive i saw just a tx go for 60.

Yeah, but then when you add 160-170 or so to get just one spektrum module and a single RX, its already more than a new in box spektrum system that has 2 RX and 2 servos.

Sometimes having more adjustments is not necessarily a good thing. The more settings one has to concern himself with, the more time you spend fiddling with those rather than using it.

Definately get the Nomadio React!!

I dont know Squee, on one hand I like it, but on the other, I just cant go thru life always following in your footsteps!

I wish I had a React...I have a M8...I do plan on selling it and getting a React though...

if you budget allows, i recomend the futaba 3pk... a vast majority of drivers in my area use this radio... including myself... futaba will be releasing a 2.4GHz version soon... i use the spectrum modules and recievers with mine...
