which pinion

hey I'm going to be buying the 7xl and I was wondering which pinion should i get for a hyper 7 conversion? also, is there anywhere where i could find lipo's for cheaper than $150+?

$150 isn't bad for LiPo batteries. Which pinion depends on how many cells, and what spur your running. Just make sure you run a plastic spur...

ReDrUm_Racer 11.12.2006 12:32 AM

it'll be 12 or 14 cells, so what gears would you reccomend?

MetalMan 11.12.2006 12:37 AM

For 12 cells, a 14t pinion should give you around 37mph, which is a good running speed. For 14 cells, a 12t pinion will give you about the same speed as a 14t pinion with 12 cells, but the 14 cells will give more runtime.

alright looks like ill get a 14t pinion. there're a few mod1 pinions on the sale page, which one should i get? also, is the regular hyper7 spur fine?

MetalMan 11.12.2006 01:13 AM

You'll want to get a 5mm bore mod1 pinion (14t). It would be a very good idea to replace the spur gear on your center diff with the Kyosho 46t plastic spur gear, which is on the same page as the pinion gears. It fits the Hyper 7 diff fine.

ReDrUm_Racer 11.12.2006 12:10 PM

why does it need to be plastic i'm wondering?

squeeforever 11.12.2006 12:50 PM

Metal on metal is a big no-no because the standard steel spur is hardened and will shred the pinion...

ReDrUm_Racer 11.12.2006 06:56 PM

oh now i see. if i got the hardened steel rcmonster pinon would it work? I just dont wnat to be replacing the spur every time i touch the throttle, lol.

MetalMan 11.12.2006 07:36 PM

As long as you have a mount that won't flex and your gear mesh is correct, the plastic spur will NOT strip. Besides, it's more likely that you would shred the hardened pinion gear than strip the plastic spur gear, and the pinion costs A LOT more to replace than the spur gear.

Alright so it looks like im getting the 5mm bore 14t mod1 pinon and the 42t kyosho(?) spur. Now for batteries. Anyone know of a place to find cheap batteries? I'm not made of money here, lol. I don't want to spend more than $75 on batteries, and im lookin for 2 6- or 7-cell packs, the higher mah the better. thanks for all the help btw.

glassdoctor 11.13.2006 11:45 AM

Promatch batteries have some of the best deals...

And yes you want the Kyosho plastic gears... 44t or 46t. Tough as nails as long as the motor doesn't slip and mess the mesh :)
