18T gearing

Hey guys,
I just got a Dynamite C4 (for my RC 18T) and will be getting a Quark 33a to go with it. This will be running on a Maxamps 3s 2100mah. The gearing that I have now is 14/60. Is this ok gearing? If not, what is recomended.
Thanks.

Get a tempgun and throw in the pinions you have got. Best way to judge if the system is taking it well.

Good point Serum.
Are the temps of these little motors supposed to be like the bigger ones? If not, what range should I be looking for?
Thanks.

I imagine with that gearing it will get pretty toasty. I agree with Serum though. This is exactly what I did and I had to go all the way down to 11/60 on my Mamba 8000 to keep things at a resonable temps (esc 110-130 and motor ~150). And I was only running Maxamps 2S 2100.

Thanks riceman. Are those temps (esc 110-130 and motor ~150) about ideal for these little setups? How hot is too hot?
Thanks.

Early on, I thermalled my poor Mamba on at least one occasion - temps were getting up to the 200 range on the motor AND ESC. I would use the same temp guidelines as the big motors.

i believe the max temps for BL motors is 120 degrees C, hotter then that they degrade. but i'm not entirely sure.:026:

I am running the mamba 6800 motor in my 18T with 13/55 gearing. Usually you want to have lower gearing on a higher kv motor so I would probably start with an 11T or 12T pinion and go from there.

I've run run 6800 3s 11-55 gear on large road coarse temps ok 160-180F ran same setup on good size carpet track temps closer to 200f. For speed passes in very big parking lot 16-55 others say they run 18-55 bashing type parking lot drag races with 6800. How you drive the car has alot to do with how much gear you get away with. every time you excellerate especialy from a dead stop they draw alot of amps and make alot of heat. The tall gearing mentioned was only used to make a couple passes drag race style then let cool. 16/55 gearing was used to run a very large oval pattern only coming down to 3/4 top speed for turns then back up for straight. 6800 seems kind of optimal for three cell. my friend has an 8000 great race motor for 6cell nimh, 7cell very impresive on track. 3s only seems useful for big oval or limited run top-speed passes. I believe castle said; aim to stay under 180F. 200F shouldn't hurt anything (pushing luck- not much room for error). 220F rotor loses magnatization-becomes innaficient-runs even hotter next time - and is realy close to cooking itself. Higher kv motors typicaly need lower gearing.
