my try of a watercooled savage

here is my savage that i modded to a watercooled system.
components: bk 20120 wk, wanderer 9XL, 20cells, gearing 20/52 (fixed in first gear). a rc colleage of mine has modded his schulze 18.97kw (pics below) to used it with watercooling for his bl mp 7.5.

in my frist try i used a nitropump from sullivan that works from 6v - 12v. the powersource was a 2s liion battery pack. i tried the setup since september 06. so the hardcore test in summer is still missing. but with outside temps around 20° i didn't need the pumps so i took it away. now i only have this small "handpump" that i push a few times when changing batteries.

the radiator is made out of two small copper parts with two copper heatsinks that are used for the ram blocks in pc's. some little antioxidant in the water.
the equalisation tank is also from sullivan. its a 1oz small flextank (you can heat it up and form it).

experience so far after about 25 runs. the controller is the coolest part and never got over 60° even after two 20cell-runs. so i had no temp issues so far. the motor got quite hot (70°). i have to say it wasn't on a track but bashing in the gravel pit. at a track with nonstop power it may be different.

the truck is quite heavy (around 8kg). of course i made the "usual" strengthening mods (alu diff cups with slide blocks, trimmed cups for two extra outerbearings in the alu bulks, big center cups and shafts, 4 pin mod on the gearshaft etc). i also fabricated a nylon rollbar out of an FG roll bar.

the truck holds up pretty good till now. the next step is to include the motor in the water circuit. i couldn't do it yet because i have gotten the wrong mantle from bk. 6S lipos would may bring the weight somewhat down. maybe i will switch the motor to a 1950 lehner.

yes serum that was a good idea with the pins. or let me put it the other way it was a quite unreflected idea to leave this with just one cross pin.

the schulze was very cool even on 16cells in the buggy. before he had always temp shut downs with 16 cells. there was an issue now with the controller and he sent it for reparation to schulze. they can fix it for 50euro. but i would have liked to see matthias' face when he saw that heat sink with milled channels in it. :005:
