FLM Aluminum Diff Cup
I feel like such a newb asking this......
But is there an easy way to fit the pin in the cup? I'm trying to put them together and the pin that holds the 2 spider gears won't go in much.... I got it half way in but I forced abit..... but it won't go any further. I just want to know if this is normal? |
|
Mine was the same, after a long time getting frustrated with them I ended up just forcing the pin in. It was hard to get the pin to sit staight, and it makes trying to get the right size shim hard as well.
I'm not sure if there is a better/proper way of doing it though. I did not enjoy building thoose diffs.:035: |
I'd just file the pin down slightly (if possible).

Looking at the pin itself only one end is tapered... the other end is flat.
Both the Diffs come with the pin with only one end filed. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1.../IM001864a.jpg Looking at this pic you can barely see how one end is tapered...... I'll taper the other end tomorrow. Thanks |
Hi NIS! welcome to the forum.
These Quads with paddle tires do nice in the sand.. I understand your newbe feeling, you don't expect this to be like this when you buy something new as a set. I guess something went wrong with your diffs; here is what you should do; Take a dremel and make round corners on each end of the pin. The first batch of these diffcups had the same issues, the pins should be tapered on both sides. DOn't take of too much, you want the pin to touch as much aluminum as possible. Just take off enough so you don't need to force them in. (the pin needs to move freely to prevent wear on the gears) |

No diff problems yet.... only reason I got these is because I'm building a BB Tmaxx. I rounded the non tapered end..... now it's perfect (nice and snug). One more question..... what is best for the spider gears? Pack them with grease, put a spring (from a pen), or fuel tubing between the 2 gears? |
Indeed welcome. I don't know about th fastlanes but there are like grooves in the stock cup for the gears. Also with the pin, did you try inserting one end first?
|
the problem is already solved cembom; did you took time to read the thread?
|
Thanks for the solution! I recently recieved a package of FLM goodies including the diffs. My shims have not arrived yet, but I was mocking them up and wondering how to get that pin in place. Out comes the dremel!
