Looking for Info on 1/8 Scale e-Conversion
Hello,
I am wanting an electric 1/8 scale buggy, but I am having trouble finding info on the conversion process. I am a R/C Airplane/Heli flier who has started getting into R/C cars. I am all electric, some of my airplanes are 2000+ watts. So electric isn't new too me, just cars. There is a local track I want to drive at, everyone there is running 1/8 scale buggies or truggies. I have drive my 100% stock e-Maxx there, but it is lacking! I was thinking about the Ofna 1/8 Ultra MBX R2 Buggy 80% Prebuilt kit, is this a good conversion canidate? Thanks Brian |
Pretty much anything can be converted really. Some of it is a little creativity, some of it is how willing you are to do a little fabbing. Mike (site owner) has several center differential mounts/motor mounts he's made for various people here (myself included).
Sometimes, there are some "obstacles" where you have to do a little thinking to overcome them. For instance, I'm converting a CRT .5 truggy and am having trouble with the center diff. It's just a matter of finding the perfect thing that will work. Basically, first strip the buggy of all Nitro parts. Then, see how much room you have for batteries, motor, ESC, UBEC, receiver, etc. Don't forget than buggies can be somewhat limited in room height-wise, especially on the sides and front where the body sits kinda low. Most buggies are VERY similar and there are quite a few people here that have already done some. I've done an Ofna Hyper 8 buggy (go to the last several pages) and am quite pleased with it. |
Mike just actually made a motor mount for my converted buggy, and I'll tell, as will most of the other members, that he does some incredible work. You just have to think outside the box, and choose how and where you want things mounted to the chassis, etc.

Like you I'm also from the eheli scene. I'm still busy with my conversion. I chose a Jammin X1-CR to convert and bought the FTE kit (rolling chassis) a while ago to see what all was involved. Like BG said, you really need to get the car and get it to the point of a rolling chassis so you can see what all is needed and how much space you have to work with. |
You might want to go with the Jammin X1-CR, Like Aragon did. Mike just make a motor mount for the CRT, which if I'm not mistaken, will fit the CR as well.

I am also looking to convert a 1\8 to race at the local track what motors are good. I know the 9l works well but was wondering if there is any other good choices. I will be running a mamba max on 3s lipo mabey 4s.

Most people here run an XL size motor, or a 1512/1515 Neu motor, or even an LMT (Lehner) motor - any of the bigger ones. The larger can will help with heat. Since you are using the Mamba Max, I would stick to 2 pole motors like the XLs or the LMT 19xx. The wind (turn count) is determined by the battery voltage you want to use.

thanks:) any idea about how much run time I could expect from a 3s 6000 runing a 9L /xl in a kyosho 777 geared 14/46 or so. just wondering if 6000 is enough or should I go bigger. thanks again

I would go to 4s. With a 9xl motor and a 6000mah pack you should be at about 20 minutes at a race pace.

I thought about it but A freind has 3s and is almost equal to the nitros laks a little on top but has more tourq. I figure if I went 4s it would be a nitro killer and they would make us start a new class which would suck.

go with a higher turn motor then. seriously 3s will be hard on your batteries to get the power you will need. 4s and a 9xl should give you more torque and about the same top end as a nitro.
