Some Question from a BL noob

Hi all,
I am new to brushless...and considering converting my Revo. After reading some thread. I still have some questions.

Do you use the stock spur gear? Or do you switch to a different pitch.
I am considering getting a 8xl and a mamba ESC with 2 lipo pack. I noticed most motors have 5mm shafts. Where do you buy the pinions? RC Monster seems to be out of stock on pinions. And what gear ratio do you guys run. I do mostly bashing. Hoping to do some high speed runs down the street :017:

Welcome to the forums!

Stock spur is Mod1, which is what everyone here prefers.

When you say 2 lipo pack, do you mean 2s lipo, or two seperate packs? 2s is going to require a lot of current to push that around and it won't go fast on an 8XL. 4s or 5s would be better. And if you want speed runs, 5s on a 7XL, or gear up on the 8XL.

Most buy the pinions here. If you need something specific, email Mike (site owner) and see what he can do.

I know for a fact that the pinions should be in stock any time soon now.

What is the best way to wire 2 packs series? or parallel? does any one have wiring diagrams for each type of setup?

http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_lipo.html

this shows you how to wire, mostly you use 4s1p.

I was going to run 4s. What size pinion (how many teeth) would be good for a 8XL.

have another question. I notice some people are using the novak HV system. how is that compare to the Mamba with 8XL? So many question in my head but just couldnt remember them all...

Hot in terms of temperature, and weak in terms of power compared to an 8XL.

The MM controller is one of the smoothest controllers money can buy.

chumanji 04.04.2007 01:06 PM

Just saw the MM controller spec. it only take 3s or 12cell. If I run 4s, do i just turn off the lipo protection or it can not run 4s at all??? What kind of battery are you guys running on the MM?

Serum 04.04.2007 01:11 PM

The lipo protection is good upto 5S

but you do need a UBEC above 3S.

chumanji,

welcome to the RC-Monster forums!

The Mamba Max seems to respond well up to 14v reliably. Some have successfully run as high as 20v (5s fresh off the charger)

I run 12 NiMh and have a set of 8cell NiMh's (would be 16-cells total) but have not tried them yet.

The biggest issue is keeping the ESC cool. Put a fan on it, use a UBEC, and use an efficient motor that keeps the amp draw down.

Thanks all for the answer. Wish I found this forum earlier...:027:

I saw the wiring diagram for the UBEC. Do i need to disable the BEC within the Mamba controller? Or would I just connect the sigal wiring to the receiver and leave out the + and - wire.

And wat size Pinion are you guys using for 8XL?

Serum 04.04.2007 02:13 PM

You need to unhook the red wire from the MM (the center one)

here, check this site for gearing.
