Brushless RC10GT
This rc10gt was my very first hobby grade R/C car. I bought it in 1999 and it has been a great vehicle, but I don't run it any more due to the nitro mess that comes with driving it. So, I am in the process of turning it into an electric truck. I don't have any need to go super fast, I just want it to be a tough basher that runs cool.
Originally when I found this website I bought a Kyosho MP 7.5 to convert, but I want to try the GT first to get my feet wet. I've been doing the crawler thing for the past 2 years and it's time to make something a little faster. Right now I have a 9xl and Mamba Max. Not sure on the batteries yet. I will try the 3000mah Nimh packs I have for now and then decide if I want to get some better cells. I would like to put off Li-po as long as I can mainly due to lack of funds and there are so many options I have no clue what to get. I also plan to use a reciever pack in the stock holder out back. The standup throttle servo mounts nicely where the fuel tank was with the stock chassis holes. This is what I will use for steering by making a longer steering link. The batteries will go on either side of the servo. I haven't figured out how to secure the batteries yet, any suggestions are much appreciated. The motor mount is made of Delrin that also doubles as the lower tranny mount. I will probably mount the reciever or the MM on top of the mount. If the motor gets hot I will drill some holes in the sides, possibly add a small fan. I have an 8XL in my Monster GT and if I don't have enough slip in the clutch, it snaps the second gear shaft in the tranny. The 9XL has even more torque. I think something will go "clack" as soon as you squeeze the trigger.
Is that a plastic motor mount? |
The Mgt is built heavy duty too! Imagine that going through 48p gears!

Crikey, that motor looks big on there! I would say no more than an S size, or maybe an L motor!

Given the light weight, I would really recommend a short can motor on 6 to 9 cells. As far as the battery mounting. some good old Associated battery cups would be perfect.

I have an original Novak SS system around here somewhere. Maybe that would work better? Only 7 cells max though. I guess I need to work on the buggy so I can find this 9xl a home. AAngel: Yes that is a type of plastic, known as Delrin. It is very stiff and machines nicely (doesn't gum up the cutting bit). I just did some rough cuts with a bandsaw and will clean it up on a mill when I get a chance. BrianG: Is an 'S' a 280 size motor? pb4ugo: I tried some of the Associated cups, but they didn't quite fit due to the raised sides of the chassis. I will probably end up milling out my own trays. |
An "s" motor would be just like your 9xl, (540 size) only much shorter. There are actually "s" "l" "xl" motors in different sizes, like 540, 380, etc....

A 540c 7s on like 8 cells would be fast and much lighter than your current setup...

Updates
Put my Novak brushless motor in with the Mamba Max, and so far the bench test has gone well (but they always do). We will see how it goes tomorrow when I take it outside. Much better than the first version. I put a 9L in my rusty on 3s and it was so stupid I broke it in like 2 minutes. It would have been funny as hell to watch that RC10GT on 12 cells and a 9XL. I would have put the under/over at around 1 minute 12 seconds before it blew something apart.
I am curious to hear how the novak runs on the MM. Side note: Those batteries look like poo.... I'd invest in a decent pack. You will get much better results. If it doesnt run well, first recomendation will be to try a decent battery. |

I did the 9XL in an RC10GT... it didn't last very long.. :)

Went for a test drive today. The only issue (big one) is that it won't start up on it's own from a stand still. Give it a slight nudge and it takes off. No problems once it gets started. From a stand still it will just shutter and rock back and forth until I physically push it. Kind of like a hung brush in a brushed motor, but with more drama.
Other than that it ran great, no extreme temperatures and no smoke. I will test out some of the Mamba's settings to see if I can get a better start up. The batteries sure aren't the best, but I was quite surprised by the runtime. I drove for at least 15 minutes and the batteries still hadn't dumped. I will have some Intellect 3600's in next week. Gearing is 14t pinion/66t spur. |
