ST-R Brushless Help!!!????
I am in the process of setting up my brushless ST-R and i am stuck on a motor to buy and a cell count to run it all.
Here is my setup so far- MM ESC 3 cell MaxAmps Lipo 5000 mah 100 amp cont. 150 sust. 250 burst Nomadio TX/RX (has telemetry so a ubec or lvc is not nessacary for me) (will run sep rx batt to power servos) 46 tooth kyosho plastic spur and the stock metal 52 tooth stock diffs My qustion is what motor to get and what pinion for the motor and if my battery will run it all efficiantly? I am looking at a Feigao 7xl with 13 tooth pinion?????????? With the batt i have now!! I would like to keep the lipo i have now but will upgrade if it is not enough and if the esc can handle it? |
Wow, I wish I had that kind of money.
Shoot for a 4 cell lipo and check out brian G's speed calculator for gearing. I recommend an 8xl |
LOL i do not have alot of money that is why i ask for help? I did use the speed calc and at 3 cells i need a 17 tooth pinion and with 4 i only need a 13 so i will upgrade to 4 cels eventually and why you reccomend the 8xl instead of the 7xl ( more efficient ?) Thanks for the hel though

3s isnt much in a trugg.
it might work but i'm not sure. if you really want to keep the current batt you could use a 6XL 2500Kv. if you use 4s lipo, it will be great with an 8~9XL. if you use 5s lipo you need either the 9 or 10 XL. you can use 4s on your mm. |
I'm going to say 4S with a 7XL should do nicely.
3S really isn't adequate power. |
A 7XL on 3S is going to destroy the batteries. It think it will anyway. For a truggy, I'd go for an 8XL or 9XL on at least 4S.

K i want to thank everyone for the advice it is nice to know there are still people out there willing to help fellow rc'ers. I am going to run the MM with a 8XL and a 4 cell lipo. I will play with gearing to get it the way i want it to perform.
One last question. should i get 2 of these http://maxamps.com/proddetail.php?pr...o-6000-74-Pack or one of these http://maxamps.com/proddetail.php?pr...-6000-148-Pack I think two would be better so you could even the wieght out but will have to charge sep and balance sep. one more weight to one side but can charge as one and balance as one and less wires (no y connector needed) Let me know what you all think? Thanks |
Some have found that the Maxamps 3000mah cells (that are in the 6000HV packs) aren't all that great... However, the Maxamps 5000mah cells have been awesome in my experience with them. You could get a 4s1p 5000HV pack, and run it with a 7/8/9XL.
http://maxamps.com/proddetail.php?pr...-5000-148-Pack And, the 4s1p 5000HV pack is $25 cheaper than the 4s2p 6000HV pack and 140grams lighter. |
I have to agree with Metalman here. I have a 5s 6000mah and a 5s 5000mah pack that I run in my 8ight, and the 5000's have more punch. If you need more runtime I would check out the 8000's.

I run the 5000HV as well, with 7XL at the moment. Got a 8 XL in the mail, 7 XL too fast on our small track. The weight of the 5000 works out pretty good if you put single pack opposite motor and everything else. Any higher capacity than that and I would go 2 packs for balance (but dang heavy)

Cool thanks guys. Everyone has helped out alot. I currently have the 5000 in 3 cell and ran it with my evader with the mamba 5700 and it lastested forever and ran reall really good.
SO MY LIST IS - currently own - MM esc Fans Rx batt and Nomadio with telemetry buying later tonight if no objections from fellow rc'ers Feigao 540c (has the heat sink already) 8xl 5mm bore 13 - 18 pinions max amps 5000hv 4s lipo I am going to disable my internal bec and i believe i do this by disconnecting the red center wire from plug on the esc and set the cutoff in the settings to no cutoff. please correct me if i am wrong but from everything i have seen and read that is the way to do. Again thank you all for the help. |
yes, pull the red wire from the plug.
and i would set cutt-off on 12V. |
if you are going to run 4s, you should set the cutoff in the 12-12.5volt range.
|
Well i guess runtime depends on how long the 5000 will last?
And as far as the cutoff, i have the nomadio with a voltage sensor and it will alarm me when the lipo gets below 12v or so. I can also set it to do an action on the event of the alarm (like disable throttle). Figured i would make the radio do the work to take less off the esc. My thoughts were the less the esc has to do the cooler it will run. |
I'm actually running the cutoff with my 4s 5000mah battery at 13.2v, and more recently at 13.6v (3.2v/cell and 3.3v/cell). I'm not sure this even tames the power output, but I can say it is too much power :). You might want to set the voltage sensor to 13.6v, since these 5000mah cells won't be hitting that voltage very often. And when they repeatedly hit that voltage, they are done.
