Finaly got there...

Just thought I'd share with you guys a little fun I had tonight.

I was out with some local bashers at a shopping mall parking lot tonight and finally made it. I broke into the 60 mph club.:027:

The setup was:

Cen Matrix Brushless Conversion
5s 4350mah Enerland Lipo
Neu 1512/2.5D
Quark 80B
Geared 18/46
Old bald ofna tires

Started off at 16/46 gearing and got 55.3mph. Then switched to the 18T pinion and got 57.4 Then adjusted the wing flat and moved the GPS to the underside of the wing for less air drag and got the 58.8. Then switched to a fresh charged lipo and got 59.4. I was really annoyed at this point that I couldnt get to 60. Then someone sugested putting the body on. I had been running the speed runs with the body off to let more air get to the ESC and motor. I put the body on and made one more pass and.... 60.5!!! (Thats 97kph for those of you that live in a place where they use a logical measurement system.) That was the last pass of the night. If I didn't make I would have had to go back next week cuz I didn't have my 20T pinion with me. Man it starts to get squirly at those speeds. I know this is no record, but I was pretty happy to make it.

I was actually a little worried. It was pushing the poor little 80B pretty hard. I normally run much more conservative gearing with that speedo. Its a little on the small side for this kind of thing. I was half expecting to see a poof of smoke at some point, but it held up well. I gotta say, for all of the little faults in the quarks, they are pretty solid. It never even thermalled once, even after multiple back to back runs.

Funny thing is when I came home I ran the setup through my speed calc spreadsheet and the one that Brian made and both said top speeds of only around 55mph assuming the full 18.5V. I musta had some good tire balooning going on.

Anyway heres the proof picture. Not the greatest quality, it was a camera phone. One of the guys there also got it on video, but it was someone that I didnt really know. I gotta track him down an see if he can send me the video.

Cool dude.. So how does it feel?.... are you free now? ... :)

Does speed go up if the tires are greatly ballooning?

Serum 05.12.2007 10:05 AM

Yeah! power comes from the batteries for sure!

The 1512 is quite a motor! Too bad you didn't made any vids..!

:)

Yes. A ballooned tire has a larger diameter and therefore a larger circumference. A larger circumference means more distance covered with each rotation, resulting in a lower final drive ratio (taller "gearing").

Nice job making it to 60. I'm hoping to get my G2R to 50mph with a 1950/6 Hi-Amp...but it has to get here first.

Yes, at his speed even a 1/4" radius tyre balloon would add 5mph, assuming the motor keeps doing the same rpm.
I wouldn't be supprissed if he had at least 1/2" an inch tyre balloon though at that speed.

t-maxxracer32 05.13.2007 12:29 AM

wouldnt it get much more wobbly when the tires to ballooni causing it to crash or something? i woudl think at least idk..

jhautz 05.13.2007 12:37 AM

yea... It got pretty loose at that speed.

Heres a really bad video of the 59.6PMH run ruigh before I put a body on and got the 60.5 run. At least its something.

Yeah, it can get unstable, and none of my cars have gone as fast as that.

zeropointbug 05.13.2007 12:42 AM

LOL, that must have been a PITA. :005: Congrats man!

I can't believe you are doing that with the Quark 80b, does it ever thermal?

Does the 80B have the same thermal pad issues as the 125b?

jhautz 05.13.2007 12:48 AM

I dont' really know, but I ssume its the same inside as the 125. I never opened it.

No the thing never thermaled, but I was just doing a couple speed runs then shutting down and making adjustments, then running again. Like I said.... I was half expecting some smoke... But the little guy held up great. Not a single problem. Ran it today with the conservative gearing I usually run with that controller and it ran great again.
