E-Maxx BL System (Sub $400)

I'm looking at throwing a BL System in my E-Maxx (10lbs and change). I use my E-Maxx for bashing 75% of the time and the rest is full out speed. Lipo's wont be for a very long time, but I am considering them in the future. This is what I have right now;

ICE Charger
Venom 3000mah 6 cell (x2)
Venom 3600mah 6 cell (x2)

I'm looking at going with;

MM
9xl Feigao
UBEC

Is there anything else that I need to make this BL System complete? Is this absolutely everything that I will need to run this System safely? I am also up for any other suggestions as I'm new to the whole BL world.

You will also need a pinion, unless you have one already. Are the diffs in your maxx already upgraded?

If you stick with nimh batteries, I'd get some quality packs from Max Amps, like ib4200's.

The only other thing you may need is a good radio if you don't already have one. I've tended to have problems using ubecs causing glitching w/ some radios. It was fine w/ a cheap AM radio, but lack of adj made me use a good FM radio. I had a lot of glitching w/ the FM and the Ubec, so I used a RX pack instead. Now I have 2.4ghz radio, and the ubec and esc are glitch free.
Does not happen to everybody, but be aware if it does. :)

Thanks for the quick reply

The 9XL setup should be fine, but don't expect to see all that the system is capable of until you can get some batteries that can keep up with the demand of the brushless system.

If you are planning to only run 12 cells I would go with the 8xl or even maybee a 7xl.

IMO A 9xl may be a bit disapointing speed wise on only 12 cells. Especially if you are looking for speed runs 25% of the time.

Can you run a mm on 16 cells?

jhautz 06.18.2007 10:02 PM

probably not advised. I run one on 5s and its OK, but Im very careful with it. 16 cells is more voltage yet. 5s seems to be the upper limit, but I dont know of anyone whoe tried it yet either.

You've gotta watch what jhautz recommends. If he had his way, all of his cars/trucks would have wings on them too. LOL

:). You might be right about that.

But seriously... 12 cells and a 9XL aunt gonna exactly thrill you for speed runs. An 8XL would be a better choice IMO, and still plenty safe on 12 or even 14 cells.

Yes, I do like to keep things conservative, so you have to take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm way down south, so I have 100*F ambient temps to contend with too and there's lots of humidity which just makes everything worse.

If going fast is what you want, you might also want to consider a 7XL. I know that many who run in cooler climates have no problems running the hot motor. I have two of them and they do get a truck moving.

i ran 16 cells a bit last year b4 I went lipo. Higher init voltage (23+V, caps rated to 25V) but 4S gives better performance IMO. The top speed on 16 cells is a bit higher, but punch and accel is better w/ lipo. Plus a lot less weight. 5S is way more power than 16cells.

4S/14cells and 8Xl is a great combo for reasonable speed and reliability. If you can go to 14cells, that would be the biggest help. Better cells at that too. The 3600s might be ok, but I can tell you the 3000s are crap. :)

Well, my overall plan was to throw a BL system on a stock E-Maxx and then fix parts as they break. I'm starting to think that the truck would be down more then it's up until I have all the parts. So, what am I going to need to put in a BL System into my E-Maxx? I'm looking at a budget right now of around $400, but that could always change for the better. If you could post links as to where I could purchase this stuff and from whom, that would be great.
