New GPS system.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-GARMIN-EDG...QQcmdZViewItem
I refuse to remember proper html so I can tidy up the link :027: . Anyway, its a bicycle GPS system that measures, amongst other things, SPEED, and has a usb cable & software so you can upload the info to your pc/mac. Its also a lot cheaper than some older type walking GPS systems people have been using. I may very well get one- beats paying £70/$140 for a radar gun.:024: |
You need to know how many calories your vehicle burned?
Radar gun is around 70 usd. |
In the Uk a Bushnell radar gun is £70, and thats on ebay so in the shops/online shops it will be more expensive. The principle is all that counts in my book- a reliable way of measuring the speed. A radar gun would be more fun to use, but you need a second person to operate it remember; I am a sad loner with goldfish for friends so a GPS unit would make life much easier.
|
training a goldfish can't be that hard.... They also happen to know when its breakfast, brunch and lunchtime, (right down the exact minute) so i think you got a potential candidate for holding that radar... Only need to feed them a bit of steroids and you'd be set...
GPS isn't too accurate either; it takes a while before it realizes it's doing a certain speed. the longer you can keep a certain speed, the more accurate it will be. |
Hmm, Im starting to think that running beside a real car would be more accurate, so long as I held a straight line.... One way or another I would like to know the exact speed of the setup.
|
Yeah, my car GPS takes a couple of seconds to correctly report the speed. If you can get a hold of a radar gun, surely someone of your fabrication skills should be able to whip up some type of holder so it can take the reading? :)

For 10p its a bargain I'll take a dozen.
Seriously tho, how much do they go for? |
I could knockup an extra limb to hold the gun I suppose, that would mean I have 6.... *grins*
An onboard system would be nice- a simple duct-tape mount would secure it, and I could find the fastest speed overall from doing multiple passes across my park- you can easily get upto and hold full throttle for 10 seconds or more. Edit: not sure on prices yet- I have seen identical units with a Buy-it-now price of about £50-60, but hopefully I will get one of the 3 or 4 starting at 10p. I wont pay more than ~£20 though, since shipping is £12.99 or something stupid. |
Just so happens I have a mountain bike I'd love to have this on. I think I"ll buy one and try it on both my bike and RC.
These auctions that aren't buy it now kind of give me a headache. Anyone know where you can get these online other than ebay? |
Are you in the US or UK? If you do a search for 'garmin gps' then you will find the buy-it-now ones quick enough, if not then online electronics stores sell them, or bike stores, that kind of place.

U.s.

Forget what i said before- the US ebay site is a nightmare to navigate, and the gps systems I did find were alot more than I thought they would be.... Google has the answers probably.... it usually does.
|
i have the Garmin 305 on my bike. I've thought about putting it on my RC car too.
The speed is actually registered quite quickly, and adjusts quickly. It won't be perfect, but good for reference. And you could check the height of jumps with the altimeter... oh, and the best price I've seen on the 305 (same as 205 but without the HeartRate monitor i think) is $325. |
Thats amazing that the altimeter is precise enough to measure how high a jump is.
Knowing my heartRate on a big Revo jump might be kind of fun LOL. J\K |
