Vehicle to start racing
 

I was out playing with my brushless RC10GT this weekend and my brother in law was there with me. He was very impressed with the truck, the speed and everything about it. I was saying to him that I wanted to start racing it at some time and he was also interested in starting to race with me. I was thinking about recommending the XXX-T Sport RTR Brushless for him to purchase and race with.

What does everyone think of this vehicle? Will it be enough to start racing at an entry level?

all losi are very good first cars.

The xxx-t is a very good vehicle i have owned one my self and so have many of my friends. Though if he is just starting i would recommend a rustler or a vxl rustler.

the rustler may not be as adjustable, but it will be much stronger not just for bashing but for racing. IMO it would be a much more reliable car too. My brother owns a stock newer rustler and the only thing he has upgraded on it is rpm hubs and casters. Out of the whole summer of racing and extreme bashing he has only broke One caster block. Also unexpectedly it is a fairly decently good racer. he races it with T4s evaders, and xxx-ts and he wins most of his races and he just started driving this year (only 12 years old). Even with the stock rustler he only seems to be behind the Brushless xxx-ts by a few miles an hour. I would personally go with the rustler based on my personally experiences.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was thinking the XXX-T because he wouldnt really have to upgrade anything to start racing. I would think that the stock Rustler motor wouldnt be enough to race with, or if we went with a new brushless Rustler it would be almost the same price.
Does anyone right now race one of these trucks stock? Can it be upgraded to a SS5800 motor?

I learned to drive on the T3 got it when it first came out and it just got retried. Only broke the skid plate and a arm. Had to replace quite a few things due to wear though.

A T4 or XXX-t would be a great starter imo.

Personally, I would go with the Rusty VXL. MANY hopups and performance parts, and, the stock setup is blazing fast. on 3S LiPo your look at around 65mph...Keep in mind most of the 1/10 trucks are running around 25-30 on the track, depending on the size.

How is the stock rusty with the VXL system? There have been some reports here that it runs kinda hot. Of course, if geared down to a more modest 40mph, it probably would run cooler...

Before you purchase anything, I would see what your LHS supplies for parts at the store itself. It's nice just to walk in and get what you want without having to wait a few days for that itty-bitty part that is required to run! :smile:

you cant under estamate the strengh of the losi st's, i had a xxx-nt and i put a huge beating on it and i only broke a shock tower and a front arm over a year and a half spand.

On 2S, it does run a bit warmer than my MM/Orion Vortex 5.5 in my T4, but it is a heavier vehicle. I do think that the Velineon system might run well in a vehicle like a T4 though. However, I would not recommend the VXL Rustler for anyone that wants to race regularly. It's just too much of a pig in the weight department.

I guess my Jato is out too. It's a hefty 4-4.5lbs...

I just weighed my Team T4 and VXL Rustler in their RTR Trim.

Team T4 with Trakpower Lipo - 3lbs 10.8oz

VXL Rustler with Trakpower Lipo - 4lbs 8.1oz

That's weird how the Jato weighs the same or less than the VXL Rustler?!! Especially with all the Al parts and Al chassis...

That is kind of weird about the weights of both of them. Maybe all that extra plastic really does add weight. The new tranny with all steel/aluminum gears helps with the extra weight as well. But an aluminum chassis... I'd think it would be significantly heavier than the VXL.

I have a xxx-t and it's a very strong truck for being a racer. You do need to upgrade the stock steel turnbuckles though. They are very weak. I've also replaced the screws to a stainless set. Throw on a set up tires that hook up well for your track and you're ready.

However I don't know if you want to go with the weaker Novak brushless system for racing. I would rather go with a stock motor or one of the other novak systems like the 5.5.
