Winter driving setup... pics
 

Hey guys, thought I would show my setup for winter driving...

This thing hauls @$$ on hard packed snow (with top layer of snow), and the ESC stays pretty dry, only a few drops of water from snow, nothing to worry about. The runtime seems to be about 20 mins in snow driving with 7s1p pack, and geared for ~42mph. It really cleans the truck up too! :yes:

is the truck off balanced because of the a123 cells?

That's one hell of a machine, nice setup. Love the way the quark's mounted.

Yeah, it is pretty nice, nothing special though.

The A123 pack does not put it off balance, although, if I pull full throttle and let the tires balloon up there is a tendency for it to veer to one direction, consistently.

The Quark is mounted awesome, i know! I was playing around and found the you can switch the motor mount to the other side of the bottom plate (RC Monster revo mount) and mount it the other way. Really handy, it should get alot of air come summer.

Thats reminds me, I also need to get my Revo or RC10GT ready for the snow for mountain trips. :smile: I'll probably use the RC10GT though... because everything is already waterproof. :party:

what motor is that ? It can't be pulling to many amps if you get 20min runtime on a 1p of A123 cells right ?:surprised:

The 7S takes care of that. The energy is there, it's just put in voltage over current, that's it.

Is that a Cap mod that I see? A much smaller one than your completely modded Quark. Just got a new ESC huh? I like that heat sink. Would the Quark do 8S A123 without giving out the smoke?

I'm surprised this much power doesn't blow the lower tranny output gear. I think that's probably the weakest point IMO.

You do have center cvd's I see, so the stock Revo drive shafts must be pretty tough.

I've been looking around for a nice ubec/bec circuit. Does anyone make a version that has a broad operating range? Like from 4S to 12S?

Nice Battery setup! Twin plugs. You can bring it in after a run, then charge it through the unused one. Good idea! :yes:

Yes, it's fairly high voltage, equal to 6s lipo. The 1512 motor is probably only drawing max 45 amps on the low traction surface, but it's different... kinda of a constant current draw from constant wheel spin. :yipi:

The Quark is a new one, I got it from AAngel... he modded it before he sold it to me. Yes, it works great too with the low temps of -10*C (14F), and the heatsink mount it's on. I have never tried 8s A123... i think it would most likely cog like everyone else is saying happens on 6s lipo on the Quark. About the BEC, doesn't the Kool Flight UBEC go to 45volts? IIRC?

The Badlands are doing great in snow, i was surprised how well they grab, but just enough to still allow for some nice drifting. Also, after a run, once dried off, the rubber is so clean that it becomes sticky, very sticky... when you put it onto a clean surface and pick it up, you can feel it grabbing into the surface.

Glad to see i'm not the only one driving a brushless truck/truggy during winter season. If you don't mind this is how i protected my electric components. I even made some basic video clips on snow and ice: clip1, clip2, clip3. And here is an eagletree graph of one of my runs on snow.

Are those 18650 cells? If so, I've tried that setup before. For low amperage use, where cell arrangement can afford 5 amps or less per cell, it seemed to work pretty good. I didn't get much cycle life out of them though.

Yes ... Sony 18650 VT (Konion 1100). They are good up to 25A, don't need any balancer and have a better cycle life than lipos. I use them in a 8s2p config and can pull up to 1150 Watt out of them. This is perfect for snow driving where you won't need those high Amps to get good acceleration. On high grip surfaces they are no match to my 10s1p A123 setup which is able to provide up to 2200 Watt.

Snow.... we used to get that once too, but these days its just rain-rain-rain. How much does that Revo weigh rtr- looks rather unweildy with all those A123s on there, but looks are rather deceiving! That is one good thing about winter though, you dont have to worry about temps so much....
