Easy Question - controller
 

Will need a new controller. Currently 12020 8XL 14 cells E-Maxx. I am pretty sure I blew a capacitor on the 12020. What controller would you recommend? I am mostly into horsing aroung and bashing, so a basic one will work. Speeds of 40 mph. Can the BK controller be repaired? Thanks!

I'm a big fan of the Quark Controllers. I've been running the Quark 80 amp just about all year now. It's never let me down and It's ran several motors wonderfully. Although I do have my eyes on the 125 amp Monster Pro Quark.

If it's just a Capacitor and that's all that's wrong, sure it can be fixed.

Just be sure to replace it with low esr type 105C of similiar size. You might see some gains in smoothness if you replace the one bad one with several caps similiar in size.

if you run the quark, you will have to do the cooling mod.

I am pretty new at this. Where is the best place to get the cap? Do I solder off and then replace the other. Are there any web sites that you know of that walk you through this? Thanks!

I blew a cap on my 9920 so I sent it to BK for repair. Turns out some of the fets were fried too.

Digikey or similar supply houses are your best bet. You can also usually find eBay auctions for them. Basically, look for either "low ESR" (which stands for Equivalent Series Resistance), or the 105*C temperature rating. At the least, you want caps with the same capacitance and voltage rating. It is OK to go higher (but will get physically larger), but not lower. And even though only one is noticeably bad, the others could be bad, weakened, and/or on their way out as well so it might be a good idea to replace all of them at once.

Caps only have two leads so replacement is pretty straightforward. Just make sure you hook them the right way because they ARE polarized. The terminal labeled with a white stripe and/or (-) is the negative lead. Just cut the leads to the same size as the original, remove the original bad one, and solder in the new one in the same way.
