Savage XSS question
I'am to buy another monster truck but this time i'll leave it in nitro. I've a brushless revo for racing, but this time my new monster will be only for bashing.
The LHS here sell the Savage XSS for $360.00 CAD, it's the better price i can find for a monster. BUT, i've never very love the Savage design, do not ask me why, i don't know, but not love it so much. By the way, can you tell me if a Savage XSS is a solid truck, diff, tranny, suspenssion, etc..... Thank you! David |
Savages are supposedly the toughest trucks made (durability wise). And I will agree with that statement also for the most part after seeing a couple abused quite badly at my local bash spot....
|
ive actually heard not to get this as an ultimate basher (i asked the same question a week or so ago.
i was told one of the toughest MTs is the associated MGT. theres a roller on ebay that is being sold by cart right now. (ends pretty soon!) |
Thoughest MTs is the NGT:rofl:
Excuse me, but the MGT is, for me, the badest MTs in the world. I've had an MGT and the plastic (arms) and drive shaft is ALWAYS broke, tranny is very weak (that was with the poor .21:oops:). Not stearing at all..... And sliper is a dump. I'll never return on an MGT. But thank you for your comment:wink: |
I have heard similar issues with mgt arms and driveshafts. Supposedly the shocks on savages are the waek link, the shafts like to bend?!
My buddy at the lhs told me this, and he does have to fix them. I have an aftershock that I am converting. The shocks on it look really solid, the arms look pretty good, and I have seen quite a few really beatup 1st gen lsts (basically the samr thing) that took the beating well. |
you can put some muggy shocks on the savage and make it nice ive heard right?

Good, i'll go for the Savage. The LHS who sell me my RC8 will probably trade it to me for a Savage XSS with paddle and Ofna wheel. My RC8 is NIB:yes:
And if i've issue with Savage shock i'll converti it to Muggy or Aftershock shocks. |
As far as tough trucks go I think it is down to the LST2 or Savage. I have a Savage and love it. The X design is so much simpler to work on then the older models. I have a friend with an LST/2 and I have to say the savage is the more solid of the 2. The savage has it's weaknesses though. The diffs and dog bones break with lots of power like any truck. The shock shafts can bend. I have never bent a stock shock but I now run the LST2 shocks. Most people who I have seen bend shock shafts are either running 30+ wt oil or have hit something. Other big weakness is the stock tank on the savage. I broke 2 and then did a mid tank conversion which solves the leaning problem some people (including me) have on the stock tank. My mate has broken more tanks on his LST2 though then I have. I have no idea why his tanks break where as with the savage it's fairly obvious.
Edit: Good to hear you are going with the savage. If you break something there are heaps of ways to make it tougher. Just keep the A arms and shock towers plastic and they bounce off just about anything. |
david this is a question I am interested in as well- is ANY savage good to convert or is there a particular one that is tough? Is it true that one should stay away from the E-savage??? I might buy one of the ones with NO engine eg http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ducts_id/14436.
It seems odd that e-Savage with batts and charger is only 10 bucks more!!! Is it that much weaker??? |

The savage is a tough truck for sure. it's got some flaws, but so do all the other trucks.
If you add a piece of silicone hose inside the shocks, so the truck sits a bit lower, the shocks hold up fine as they are. You can also get a conversion that enables you the use of LST shocks with 4mm fat shafts. |
Thanks a lot for the advice guys!

If you want to build an electric savage there is a shop called nitronutzz on ebay which chops xss savages. I bought all the stock parts I wanted for under $120 dollars I think. This included tranny, diffs, bulkheads, screws, dog bones, turn buckles and just about everything bar nitro gear, tvp, shocks (i use the LSTs) and radio box. I just need the FLM forward tranny chassis though. |
