RCM heatsink OD & Feigao disassembly
Howdy, couldn't find the answer with a search, so could someone tell me the widest point of the RCM heatsink? I want to know because I want to put a 9L in my rustler with the heatsink clamp, the rusty gearbox has that motor protector bit I'm overly keen to dremel away - I like it when my motor has protection!
Also, I found some ceramic 70,000rpm bearings for the Feigao motors, but how hard is it to disassemble the pressed endbell version to install them? Cheers Sam |
Disassembly is simple, just tap the motor shaft end of the motor onto a hard surface, and the rear endbell should pop right off. Not certain on motor clamp measurements, but I would be willing to bet it is bigger than will fit inside the motor mount area- a bigmaxximum wont fit, and thats 43mm in diameter (the fins of the motor clamp stick up a fair bit it looks like).

Another question related. I've come to realise that my L can feigao will be absolute overkill for ye olde rusty, so I'm thinking heat may not be much of an issue from my motor (Specially since it will only be at about 30k rpm - will have to be geared pretty tall though).
Anyway, the point of the post is that I've heard of the pressed endbells of these feigao motors popping off for some reason - instead of spending $30 odd on a heatsink/clamp thing to prevent this, can you just smear a bit of loctite or ca glue or something around the endbell to stop it happening? Yep, a bit of loctite or CA glue will work, but you want the watery type so it will 'wick' into the tiny gap between the can and endbell (capillery action). You could also screw the end bells on like how the MM/ Velineon motors are assembled- a more solid method probably.

Yeah I was thinking about that... Should the front endbell come off like the back one? I've tried but not very hard incase its not meant to :P

Im not 100% certain, but I think both the front and rear endbells are just pressed into place, so you would be best off fixing both ends.

The front's are pressed on... albeit a bit better it appears. I whacked that thing so hard I was afraid of bending it or damaging the motor and it didn't budge. I reckon I hit it at least twice as hard as I did to get the rear off... Hmm lets hope it doesn't decide to pop off while driving now!

I ran a 9L in a rusty on 3s for a while. This is what I did because the RCM clamp wouldn't fit in the tranny housing. I got 2 pieces of 3mm threaded rod and screwed them in 2 of the tranny housing screw holes, then used a nut on them to thread up against the transmission housing to hold that in place. Then put the motor in and made a flat bar for a back plate and held that in place with a nut on each threaded rod to clamp the motor. Not quite as sexy as the RCM clamp, but it did the job nicely. The motor never fell apart and only about $.89 worth of materials.
