The shaft of the dogbone is 5mm. At the end of the dogbone before the ball you see a bit of a lip, that's where a bearing goes (to keep the dogbone stable inside of the axle). The axle shaft is 5mm, and is the same thing that is used on the HPI MT2. I already have replacements, and sometime in the future I hope to be able to make my own with a lathe in the machine shop class I am taking this summer (maybe using spring steel).
