I've had more issues with the ESC getting hot, rather than the motor. I usually make a slot in the body to direct air right to the heatsink, and then I don't have any problems. With my ZX-5, I have the ESC mounted high, so I cut out the front window so cool air blasts right on the ESC. Running that 7700kv setup heats the ESC up pretty good, so that works good to solve that problem.
I'm not so sure how much that would help a motor, unless you have some sort of finned heatsink on it. Smooth cans don't offer much surface area to dissipate heat.
