There is a way to tell if you can get a plastic spur gear for a diff - if the gear is attached directly to the diff cup via 4 screws, then you can't get a plastic gear. If the gear can be separated from the diff cup while the diff is still complete, then there is a plastic gear. An exception for this is the Kyosho buggies.
