They dont become useless as-such, but if you lock the tranny into second gear, the motor pinion & spur become 'one', so applying mechancial brakes would force the motor to try and slow down, which would be bad if the throttle was still on to any degree. Easy way around that is to use mech brakes with channel mixing on the throttle. Its all good fun...
