Any reason that using a larger spur gear would not work? IIRC there are some 48-50t metal spurs available that should fit the std diff cup. I am sure that ofna make a few different sizes. Then you could step down on the pinion size and still have adequate clearance.

If you look at the pic in post #18, you'll see where the 46t steel spur currently sits. It's pretty much as low as it can go, so any larger spur wouldn't fit properly.
