Your right, it shouldn't matter when linking it with the Castle Link. Hmm...still sounds like something with the low voltage/control section of the ESC if your fan won't spin up. Heck, put a voltmeter across the red and black on the Rx harness when you plug your batt in. It should be 5+volts.
