Way back in my early days of rc, a real rc enthusiast wouldn't be caught dead with a traxxas vehicle, they were considered toys. At the time all rc's were kits you had to build (OMG), but traxxas was the only one making rtr's. They filled a niche, less mechanically inclined people could now get into rc's (and trouble lol).
