Titanium is actually a good idea. It won't snap, but will bend. The nice thing is that it won't stay bent, but will go back into its original shape (unlike aluminum).
Instead of tapping, you can go to the hardware store and get an EZ-out, which is a special drill bit thingy that has a counter thread on it so that when the drill is spinning in reverse the EZ-out is tightening onto whatever is being pulled out.
