Yes and no. The whole spool issue is mainly so one does not have to deal with broken or stripped diff gears. It eliminates the reason for having a diff in the first place, which is for one wheel to be able to slip/spin while the other powers through whatever obstacle you may be encountering. It changes the handling feel of your vehicle quite a bit as well. THey can be useful in some applications, and yet cause issues on others. A spool is clearly one of those user frinedly choices one has to figure out for himself. For some it is just much easier to deal with, because it is very simple and easy to install. Some people are less mechanically inclined and find it difficult to build a complete diff.
