For longevity you have the right idea, always keep it topped off. I would imagine fully charged you could see 13.8v or more, once you have it fully charged take note of the voltage and that will be your goal. At the end of the charge it should feel luke warm, if it starts to get hot you are overcharging it.
A small "smart" trickle charger would be ideal for keeping this going for you, as they shut off when charged and turn on when the voltage sags.
