I recently acquired one of Cow R/C's "Jumbo Screw Catcher" work mats. While I honestly wouldn't have thought about purchasing something like this before, I will say it has come in quite handy already. I don't know about you, but I get tired of climbing under the bench to find tiny screws/nuts/washers in the shadows.
The whole mat measures 30" x 24" and is 3/8" thick. The main work area is 28" x 18.5", and is large enough to hold anything 8th scale and smaller, has a magnetic base to keep screws from bouncing into oblivion, and has convenient little tool/parts pockets. Each of the smaller pockets are 3" x 1.25" and are perfect for containing various screws, nuts, etc. The larger pockets are 8.5" x 3" and are large enough for most of those pesky hand tools that tend to roll off a bench. The entire base is magnetic and the bright white makes finding stray screws easy. The foam walls appear to be made of a neoprene type of material, so it should be sturdy and last a long time.

Here is the mat fresh out of the box. The inserts are pre-cut, easily removeable, and can be used for future storage of the mat when not in use:
