Can't go wrong with a hakko 936. It's a bargain at @$80. Mine is several years old and the tip is still like new. And I used to keep it on all day at the races back when I was still running hardwired nimh packs. I turn the temp down while not in use, but have forgotten and left it up around 50% all night a couple times, without any harm done.

Only a solder snob will say you need something better. :)

I have the 936-13 which comes with the large 908 iron w/large chisel tip. I believe it's the same model marketed to r/c with the skins, and is great for doing general rc stuff like battery connectors, etc. I manage to do almost all my soldering with it, but a smaller tip would be good if you do a lot of small stuff. It's easy to swap out tips.
