Says the American, most Australian settlers were upstanding citizens who were down on there luck, debtors that were prepared to accept the perils of an ocean voyage and life in an unknown land in exchange for payment to their creditors, and the promise of a fresh start. A good proportion of American settlers however were criminal fugitives that would never have been given that offer and were only prepared to risk their necks on an ocean voyage in a bid escape the law and save their necks from the hangman's noose.
