Actually, we have had data logging capability in our aircraft ESCS from some time.

This is more than a firmware update, it also requires a much more powerful microprocessor with a lot more memory. As we port this the surface ESCS it will require a different ESC, this can be done in firmware alone. Once the ESC is capable of data logging and there is a way to port the data to a receiver you have telemetry.
