If the gear lash is set correctly, it should not eat up a pinion in one run. I'd check the lash on the pinion, and also see if maybe you motor is flexing under load, causing the pinion to engage the spur at a angle.
I run combinations like this all the time. I use hardened/hardened and aluminum/hardened, or aluminum/aluminum on my RC pullers. If one of my tractors can pull 800lbs, I'm sure your CRT will hold up. Proper engagement of the gears is essential though.
