Since you're taking lots of stuff off anyway, I'd take everything apart and clean all the bearings and joints and replace as necessary.

If you want the end result to be "pretty", you could de-anodize the chassis (use Easy Off oven cleaner - don't get any on your skin though), make any alterations and then have it re-anodized any color you want.
