The antenna wire is actually tuned so the exact length does matter. Aside from chopping the end of the wire off, your dog could have broken the wire somewhere else that isn't visible.

I would find out the actual stock wire length and replace the whole wire directly to the circuit board inside the receiver. It's really not as hard as it sounds...
