I think Sylvester means that they can't cope with high discharge rates. A good battery will maintain its voltage level under heavy current draw. A bad one won't. ie. you pull full throttle and a bad battery will supply less power than a good one.
Never discharge Nimh cells to dead. Even Nicds shouldn't be discharged to dead in a series battery.
