There is absolutely no reason why the MM can't do 4s. I don't even know why Castle doesn't rate it for 4s. They rate the ESC for 12 cells, which is 14.4v, which is the same as 4s, which 14.8v at the nominal values. Even right off the charger, 4s is the same as 12 cells at 16.8v (4s*4.2v/cell fo Li or 12*~1.4v for NiMH). The only way I can see being out of warranty spec is using larger motors and heavier vehicles than intended. Even then, as long as the timing is set to low and punch control is set to high (meaning: less power on takeoff), the current requirements should be about the same as the MM motors running on high timing and no punch control.
@Crazyjr: You did mention some cogging on the 9XL. Did you by any chance mess around with the tioming and punch control? Those two settings should ease up on the ESC a little and should eliminate the little cogging you had. Just and idea...
