Yeah, a "normal" pinion won't last long at all on a steel spur. For one thing, the teeth are shaped different. For another, mesh has to be rock solid. At the minimum, I'd use a hardened steel pinion as the teeth are shaped right and are meant to use with steel spurs (most usually are modded clutchbells).
