Some questions on converting my savage -

With flm's kit now it seems easy to do a bl conversion so im trying to crunch the numbers if I can swing it. My question is whats the combo most recommended? Now I have a monster savage http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Savage%20Work/
LST tires and what not so I need a combo that can move those nicely, I dont want a wheelie monster just something controlable to bash with. Can you keep the 3speed and have reverse?
Looks like the FLM kit is around the $200 mark so the next is how much the esc and motor are.
Thanks!
Sweet thanks! One thing which motor? 2200?
What about the tranny, I see some locking it in 2nd but id like to keep the 3 spped and have reverse as well, possible?
i would rather fix it in first gear. you still have plenty of options for gearing it with the pinion (9-25t) and spur (47-53t).
imho multiple speed trannys do not really last long with brushless setups.
if you take the mmm combo go with the 2200 version.
I have a XL with a Kershaw Design's motor mount. I run a MMM V2 with a MaxAmps 4S 35C 8400 lipo. It fits under the motor inside the frame. Motor is Neu 1515 1Y, 16 tooth pinion, stock spur, radar confirmed 48 mph. I find its very controllable at that speed for bashing and makes for huge air when jumping. I'm still running the stock 3 speed with no issues. I'm currently doing the CEN GEN diff upgrade, I blew thru 3 stock savage diff pinions. THe truck is otherwise mostly stock, except the tires are Losi Bolt-On with Proline 23 hex rims. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the info. SO a 3 speed can stay put then, if you take out the one way can reverse be used from the esc? Now are you guys using the savage brakes or the esc brakes?
I have looked at that kershaw setup, buddy is thinking about trying their motors as well.
I'm still running the stock 3 speed with no issues.
how many batteries have you through it? and where do you drive it? in a pit with jumps etc or more like on big grass fields etc?
of course i do not claim the multiple speed tranny will not hold up in any case. just my own experience plus several threads i read during the last several years in different forums made me becoming very skeptic about the durability of those in the long run. but if it holds up so much the better.
if you take out the one way can reverse be used from the esc? Now are you guys using the savage brakes or the esc brakes?
The only way reverse can be used via the esc/motor, is if you lock it up in a single gear... the same thing applies for the brakes on the esc/motor - must be locked in one gear to utilise the esc/motor in that way.
I currently have reverse locked-out on my MMM and use the Savage mech brakes. I run on everything from dirt, paved road, grass, gravel pits (the most fun) and baseball diamonds. I'm not sure how many battery packs have been thru it, but I did the conversion as soon as the truck was released, so a summer worth of driving. I hope the tranny lives, because I love to watch the truck shift thru the gears. I did destroy a servo saver steering arm and then a servo itself, I have the big Hitec sevro now with an additional sevro saver right on the servo. I really didnt like the truck until I installed the Losi tires and it made a huge night and day difference for me. I'm not sure why it eats the stock diff pinions, my b-revo has been thru one, but I would have thought the savage would be stronger. I also think I could gear up alittle if I wanted everything runs super cool with my current setup.
well in my experiance with MY savage conversion is as follows.
maxamps batteries = junk (puff under any load, look forward to a new batter every run)
three speed or two speed not locked = tranny explosions
plastic bulks under any bl = diff exploosions
cheap motors = junk
now for the good
good battery = non puffed batteries which = less cost in the end
locked tranny = no problems at all
flm bulks = no diff problems (except bearings an out drive cups now and then)
good motor = happy camper (just go with the castle neu 2200 and you will be fine)
so figure in at least the flm bulks in your pricing too. The stock plastic flex too much under all the power. I run 18/47 gearing locked in second on a 3 speed. it is plenty stupid fast.
Bit to think about now with this info....
Doo540 got any pics of your rig?
ok so if i lock it in 2nd I can then use the esc's reverse correct?
Also anyone got a write on how to lock a 3speed? maybe sell my 3speed and get a 2speed, nice since I just put the higher 3rd gear in to
yes, if you lock it you can use the motor and esc for reverse. As far as selling your 3 speed it depends on what gear you want to lock it in. You could sell the 3 speed and pick up a standard 2 speed to lock it all depends on you. Either way will work fine. I do not have a write up but i can tell to take the clutch in the gear you want to lock and take the screws out so the shoe that comes out is free. Hold the shoe in the out position and jb weld it like that. good to go.
Ok thanks. Just a new venture for me so not sure what works and what doesnt. Maybe just run the 3 speed till it blows then deal with it lol, the shifting does sound kool and being electric and quieter it will be nice to hear it.
What is the verdict on this motor
