how does this seem right??? - 09.09.2009, 12:03 AM

i 've got a 8ight that i had outfitted with extended wheel adapeters so i could run MT tires on....... not to race, but to just get out and bash with some of the maxx's and erevos that frequent my back field.

i wanted some field speed and i felt that maybe i could find that with a simple adjustment of the ride height. i got it...it was as fast as any brushless maxx i had on my field.

the next step was to take one of my buggies with badland type of wheels in it and let it rip in the same field. it sat about 1/4" lower, but at it's highest ride height. So i let it rip... it's lower, but it didn't sacrifice any speed. it was crazy fast. i could have geared it higher than the 13 and 15, because after only about 15 minutes i was only about 138.

so what is it that causes this grass to be rendered uneffective in relation to drag in this situation? this is the same field that would destroy a velineon system in minutes in a rustler but was AWSOME in my 8ight. is it the 3hp motor w 6/s ? does the buggy have "just enough ride height to clear it or is the motor hauling through it?

i always thought MT was king of the grass fields. can someone explain this to me?

For one, even buggy tires are larger in diameter that Rustler tires, so it's easier to roll through.

Second, the VXL is basically an S size motor, so doesn't have as much torque as a larger, more efficient Neu. Comparing the two isn't fair, lol.

Third, the Rustler is lower and does have more undercarriage drag.

2wd vs 4wd. and the above mentioned reasons. with 4wd you are pulling through instead of pushing through.

I'm no expert but have made the same transition recently...

I think the additional weight benefits running in grass also, it allows momentum to pull you through divets, ruts etc that would stop a 1/10 almost dead. I ran a 6S G3 6500 in my 8ight-T last weekend & the additional weight made it almost 1:1 car like in it's handling, it didn't get upset by lumps & bumps that would normally have it spearing off in all directions

If it runs well over grass, it'll run well anywhere!
