ESC in flames - 09.12.2009, 11:17 AM

sorry, no pics...

I took my LST XXL out for a first run today, and it ended with the esc going up in flames. It's an airplane esc with car software, scorpion 12s130a.

My setup:
Neu 1521 1.5y
NEU Energy 4s&5s 3300mah30c
12s130amp scorpion esc
Geared 24/63 (35mph without ballooning)
LVC was set at 29v, 3.22v/cell

Eagle tree data showed peaks of around 90 amps, until the end, where there was a 180amp spike. I had the eagle tree connected to the 4s lipo, and at that point voltage dropped to 9.9v.

The 5s pack was new, and the 4s pack already had a few runs on it. I've connected the lipo's to my charger and they seem fine. I've attached the eagle tree data of the run, and a highlight of the end of the run.

What killed the esc? And any idea what could have caused that 180amp spike?

Landing a jump on throttle (trying to get the nose UP) will cause a high amp spike, so will something caught in your driveline.

The amp spike was probably the culprit. Check your driveline for binding.

Thanks,

I already checked the driveline as I had to take the esc and motor out of the truck. Driveline's ok. Also I wasn't jumping. Just driving around.

Hmm, cold solder joint? Check your motor and make sure the wires leading into it arent stripped and shorting on the can.

Ok, just checked the motor wires and they're fine. Could a cold solder joint on the 5s lipo cause this? It's the only new part in a setup that I've used before with no problems.

my guess is the high amp spike as well. my muggy just blew a mmm3 on 6s running the 2200kv neu 1515/1y tying to pull wheelies at high speed. that draws alot of amps with the heavy losi's when u push them hard under alot of voltage. but with your gearing im not sure, i was geared for about 50 when i had my problem on 6s. motor and battery temps were also fine when it flames up.

Georges told me for the car ESC he was going to make some changes specially with the PCB. I did some tests with the 6S 120A and had to add a bigger heat sink and a fan.

I ran the esc on 8s in my Muggy and it never got hot. I'd really like to know where that 180amp spike came from. In my Muggy geared for the same or higher speeds the max I got was 150amps on 8s.

The LT10s is in my XXL now, but I'm afraid to run it.

sorry for that! beside the usual suspects - maybe it's just a faulty esc.

I used to have a scorpion 120a, unfortunately w/out the car programm (it was ment to have tthat car program), which worked for about two batteries. but suddenly, it just smoked, w/out any reason, two minutes after plugging in, the car not moving... fortunately got replacement, but sold that one.
lost my faith in that scorpion. they claim to have high-quality stuff, but even my cheapo plane esc's have proven more reliable, that's for sure.
