Brushless conversion Inferno GT2, what motor and ESC?

Hello everyone!

I did noticed that here was already a few threads where people asked helped for their Inferno GT conversion. The goals of the conversion were different or thread didn't answer to all of my questions so I decided to start a new one.

I have a Inferno GT2 Corvette using a GRP .21 sport tuned engine. I'm getting tired of working with nitro engines, even though it has been a great and easy engine. Also i'm getting tired of purchasing part number IG110B every week, so I want to go for a centre differential.

I have been racing with a few guys on a parking lot and then there has been a bit of speed runs. As the GT seems to require a long straight to get really going, I haven't been able to get a real top speed reading. On a 400ft straight my top speed has been 52 mph.

So I would need help from you to know which brushless motor and ESC I should put into my car?

I'm looking for a top speed of 50-60mph, I would still need to have a reliable setup for racing against other cars. Batteries won't be a problem, anything from 4s to 6s, will be ok. I would probably use a Inferno buggy centre diff, so spur would be 48T (part number IS013). By meaning reliable setup for racing I mean that there won't be a possibility to jump around the track with temp gun. I would be mostly racing against nitro so 10 minutes runtime would be ok.

There won't be anything specific budget for this conversion, but off course cheaper will be nice. I wouldn't want to go over 450 usd for a motor and ESC but we will see do I have to.

The best motor/esc would be the Castle Creations 2200KV combo. Its about $300 USD and you cant go wrong with it. If you use a 4s 5000 mah pack you can easily get 50-60 mph for at least 10 min.

The Castle MMM 2200 system would be great on anything from 4s to 6s. Ran 6s on mine in Ofna GTP, very fast.

The Tekin RX8 and Mamba Monster will be your cheapest options. But 400ft is just silly to reach a topspeed of 50-60mph. The brushless will be able to reach such speeds in 132-150ft without breaking a sweat.

I've used 1400kv, 2700kv, 3000kv and 4000kv motors in my GTP. 4000KV is my favorite so far.

At the moment it seems that I will get Castle 2200KV combo. I think that I will use mechanical brakes.

It is nice that there is a possibility to go up to 6s. I will probably start with 4s and look do I need more than that.

If you are racing, 4s should be enough (maybe 5s with large track), at 6s the 2200 combo makes serious power (speed runs).

I decided not to start a new thread. Brushless conversion has been ready for a few months now. I decided to post some pictures as I have noticed by looking another threads some people would like to see how the part looks when it is in the car.

Almost everything for this conversion was ordered from rc-monster.com. I decided to keep the mechanical brake and change the 2-speed system to center differential.

Parts used for conversion:
IS009 center dogbone (Local Kyosho shop)
Hobao center differential (used)
Mamba Monster Combo 2200 Kv (RC-Monster)
Hyperion G3 CX 5000 MAH 5S 18.5V LiPo (RC-Monster)
Battery Tray Kit Inferno GT2 (RC-Monster)
Brushless Motor Mount Kyosho (RC-Monster)
Double servo and receiver tray for Kyosho Inferno GT (RC-Monster)
5mm bore, mod1 pinion 14T (RC-Monster)

I didn't notice that I will need a brake spacer due to mechanical brakes, so I didn't order it. So it was time to use the dremel. I will probably order later the rc-monster one also.

I use the 14T pinion as a starting point. This was a suggestion from Castle's Joe Ford. At the moment I have been only possible to drift with a car in a small space and all I can say is that motor didn't generate heat almost at all. Motor was something like 35C.

Hopefully this post will help someone. Don't be scared by the Perfex servo on brake, it will not stay there.

Looks good. I am using the 1415/1Y in the Kyosho GP20 car, earlier than your model. Still running another 2, but 2 speed nitro, one with stock GS.21 motor and other nice OS.21. Heap of fun mate running them together.
Your car is very clean & nicely laid out.
I would love the fleet of GT2s.

Looking good!!! Are those the GRP tires? Single speed conv looks great. Not sure if you've changed brake pads, but I found the stock ones were a bit weak (of course I was slowing down from very high speed) but I'm switching out to the ST-RR pads as I hear they handle the stresses better. Looking for an even better option if someone has any suggestions though. Nice job though!

Your most very welcome mate. I love Kyosho 1/8 and what you have done.

Mr Ford - Funny you mention brake pads. I ran OS engine with 2 speed and burnt off duel brakes first session back in the 2000 and ones with the Landmax. Got those stainless discs with some kind of fibre/heat proof lining on the disk, which I had to apply. I am talking when Tower supplied OZ with Kyosho parts.
I searched for Jville for the photo of the mutant disk, all burnt up and maggotted, but cannot find it. I wanted to show what the power of 2 speed nitro does to plastic brakes, let alone brushless!

Those are GRP tires. I have been using those always in my GT and plan to continue using those as it is cheap nowadays. Half the price from grp store compared to that what they were when I bought those. I have been using soft (B) but those take quite a long time to warm up so I think I will buy ExtraSoft (A) next.

I have been using fibreglass disks with no pads. The disks I have used are stock disks from X1-CR-FT, X1-CRT-X1-CRT-RTR. Hong Nor spare part number is XT-16, don't know if the Jammin part number is the same. The mount is the same so no further modifications required.

I also used these pads and also on the front and rear center dogbone when using the 2-speed. It is also possible to use brake in front and rear on GT, it just requires long screws and as the rear brake goes too far away use old calibers and pads or something similar as a spacer.

I really like the brake force of fibreglass disks. You could even use these nicely enough with the stock Perfex transmitter. Brake force is better than with the stock pads but as there is no pads and fibreglass it allows a bit of skidding, so there is just a small amount of wheel locking if not at all. Most of drivers I know who are using the Kyosho acre pads, also use the ABS function. Which might not be good considering servo lifetime. Brake force with acre pads is awesome.

It would be nice to see a photo of burnt disk. I have also had earlier a Pureten Alpha which also had a plastic brake disk. I don't know what idea it is to use a plastic disk.
