Is the H1N1 vaccine safe? - 04.23.2010, 06:01 AM

Don't give children flu jab: chief medical officer
April 23, 2010 - 3:53PM SMH

http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/well...0423-tig6.html

Drug regulators are urgently investigating whether the seasonal flu vaccine is safe for children, after the nation's top doctor said they shouldn't receive it.

Australia's chief medical officer Jim Bishop today said health professionals should stop immunising children under five years old with the vaccine immediately.

Professor Bishop is concerned about a spike in the number of West Australian youngsters experiencing fever and convulsions after getting the shot.

"This is a precautionary measure while the matter is being urgently investigated by health experts and the Therapeutic Goods Administration," he said.

The drug regulator is trying to establish whether the bad reactions reported in Western Australia are related to the vaccine, or whether there is a problem with how it is administered.

Professor Bishop said the TGA had contacted vaccine manufacturer CSL to identify which batches of the medicine had been sent to Western Australia, and get samples of them for testing.

"The TGA is convening an expert scientific advisory panel to review the information from Western Australia, and is seeking additional information from the manufacturer, CSL Ltd, and from regulatory colleagues internationally," he said.

The Department of Health and Ageing is also conducting its own inquiries into the issue, and states and territories are being encouraged to report any cases of fever or convulsion following the immunisation to the TGA.

Professor Bishop said those over the age of five could still receive the seasonal swine flu vaccine, while the swine flu shot was still safe for everyone - including children - to use, too.

"It is expected that the dominant flu this winter season will be swine flu and the specific Panvax vaccine is available free for all Australians," he said.

I personally see little need to consider a flu vaccine at all unless you suffer from a chronic illness, guess this article will add some more colour to the argument in Australia!

I am not a doctor and have not medical qualifications, however my take is somewhere in the middle.

I know that for three years straight I took flu shots, and every time withing 2 weeks I got the flu and was seriously ill each time. I have not taken it for the last 4 years and haven't gotten the flu once. Seems pretty obvious to me what my body is telling me. Sometimes better to listen to your body than to listen to what others say to do with you body.

I've stated that you should not take the flu shots awhile back, I think in the "Conspiracy Thread"? I'm sure Lutach has as well. There was a recent study that showed when you take a flu shot, you are 5x more likely to get the flu than someone who didn't take it, or something to that extent... maybe it was each time you take it, your chances are multiplied, I am not sure.

Texas, I remember you saying that in another thread before, which pretty much backs up the study I mentioned. Really, everyone that I know that takes shots every year look like shit, they are gaining weight, they have other health issues, they take prescriptions drugs, AND they are the ones who get the flu! It makes no sense right.

Don't expect the TGA "Panel" to bring back anything against the flu vaccines... that's what they are there for, to make up fraud science, made up by prostitute doctors/scientists.

Thanks for posting PBO.

I've got Anchylosing Spondilitis, and taking immune suppressants I am more prone to infections/flu.

This in mind, I will not take the flu shot. I have seen some really messed up stuff happen to my body because of my meds, but flu isn't one of them and similarly to Texas the flu shot actually makes me quite ill.

The ban has been actioned nationally...

"DOCTORS have been ordered to stop giving seasonal flu vaccinations to young children after about 60 suffered fevers and convulsions within 12 hours of being injected.

The nation's chief medical officer, Jim Bishop, ordered urgent investigations yesterday after adverse reactions were reported in Western Australia.

''This is a precautionary measure while the matter is being urgently investigated by health experts and the Therapeutic Goods Administration,'' Professor Bishop said. ''Until it can be established what factors are causing the apparent rise in fevers in some children in WA, I am writing to all immunisation providers to advise them not to administer seasonal flu vaccine to all children five years of age and under until further notice.''

I may be wrong but I think you may get sick from a flu vaccine because they contain either the dead virus or virus in weakened state. The goal is probably to prevent serious illness or death. I myself do not get flu vaccines. Instead I try to limit my exposure to situations where virus contraction may be higher.

My general rule is to take as little pills/shots and what not as possible.

If you don't NEED it, don't take it.

Our bodies lasted thousands of years without vaccines, I think they will be fine.

Now I understand if getting vaccinated for X is a sure life/death situation (certain baby illnesses), but things like the flu (which is all swine flu is - flu) are too common to get all worked up about.

I have immensely terrible allergies (pretty much allergic to anything that's green - plant, mold, weed, grass - you name it). And even so I take my allergy medicine maybe 30 days out of the year - if that. I only take it on the worst days where I can't stop sneezing.

I use to take a pill daily (Claritin) and after about 2 years it now does not work at all (my body got used to it and is not fully resistant to the effects). I do not want that to happen with the rest of the allergy pills that work for me, so I only take them when needed.

Same goes for pain killers - unless I'm seriously suffering, I refuse to take any. I can be in pain to the point where I'm rolling on the ground gritting my teeth and I'll still refuse to take them. Goes under the same reasoning. If I take them for every small headache, then one day they won't work when I really really need them.

My wife bought this subject up last week as she is a worry wart (she wanted the vaccine for our 3 girls). I didn't agree with it but I didn't say no either. She quizzed me a bit for my thoughts on the matter and without any further discussion canned the idea.

I'm so happy about that now We live in Western Australia
