MMM gets very hot - 07.15.2010, 11:31 AM

Hey guys,

I had a MMM previously but had to sell it. It never reached temps over 120F, and performed very well.

I've since bought another one, however this one runs very hot. It constantly gets over 160F, and is extremely hot to the touch, particularly the bullets.

It was my understanding that the esc gets hot if the car is undergeared. This is not the case since the car is geared for 70mph. So if anything, the motor should be getting hot, but remarkably it's actually staying rather cool at 130F.

So, any help or advice regarding the hot MMM would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Actually, overgeared causes ESC heat (lots of current). Undergeared usually causes the motor to heat up.

Geared for 70mph and the esc is running hot? Who'd have thought it...

Like BrianG said:

hot motor + cool esc & batts = undergeared
cool motor + hot esc & batts = overgeared
warm everything = just right
hot everything = way overgeared

Oh right, looks like I had my logic backwards.

So just for clarification, overgeared is when it's geared too high, i.e. for speed runs and the like.
And undergeared is for applications like rock crawling, so the motor has to turn more and hence generate more heat?

When the motor is undergeared, its efficiency is very poor, so a lot of energy is lost in heat in the motor itself, but an overgeared motor will heat too.
70 mph for any buggy or MT is overgeared !!! Reduce the pinion
