New split pack lipos

I guess there are new laws that require lipo manufactures to split packs for international shipping. So, if you buy a 6s it will be internally split to be 2 3s packs in one pack. more info: http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/g3lipo/ part way down the page. To make it a 6s pack you have to connect wires together to make it 6s.

I'm having trouble trying to figure out, do I leave those wires long, do I make them short as possible, do I soldier in a connector or directly soldier them together? Anybody else wondering the same thing? It is kind of a pain to setup.

I will only use this pack as a 6s. I'm going to charge them as a 6s (single charger). So many dang wires on one pack!!! + and - for each 3s and 2 sets of taps (they do give you a Y connector for the taps though)!

I kind of figured something like this might be coming along. Lots of energy stored in those cells, and if they let loose on a boat or plane could be big problems. OTOH it doesn't seem that much safer to me, I guess when they aren't connected together there is less overall potential (voltage) from a single source.

Wonder how HobbyCity will handle this? I guess the majority of their packs are within the 100Wh limit anyway

Doesn't really matter to me much because my buggy and truggy both run dual tray setups, so the biggest pack I'd need is 3S.

EDIT: A 6S 4500mah pack is right at 100Wh, so that's still pretty reasonable, and a 5S 5400mah pack is also right there at the 100Wh limit (and also single cell 20Wh limit), which is more than enough for most applications. I don't get why the article says packs over 4000mah must be split up, are they talking about higher than 6S?

I think I'm going to just soldier the wires together. I don't want them to be too short, but OTOH, I don't want them too long either.

I can see American pack manufacturers taking advantage of this.

Doesn't HK usually ship their lipos labeled as a toy anyway. I don't think I have ever received a parcel from them with a lipo warning label on it.

I worked for UPS for quite some while, they never used to carry labels then everything known to have a lithium polymer battery had to have one of these.

Made it real easy for the a holes that worked at UPS to identify which boxes had the Apple products to steal.

Looks to me like you just permanently solder the two short wires together, and attach the long wires to your connector like you normally would. Yes, its a lot of wires - but its where we are at in the technology and avoiding percieved potential problems.

I'm REALLY tempted to cut the heat shrink off and see if they are in fact two completely seperate packs.....

This exaclty what I did. I even CA glued some shrink wrap over the those wires and that whole end of the pack, to keep the wires out of the way. I was even thinking I could carefully pull the wires out of the 2 smaller taps and put them in the 1 bigger 6s tap.

That way I only have to plug in 2 connectors for charging otherwise, it is 4 connections with the Y connector and the main leads!

Just cut open a 6s hyperion ex pack to reconfigure it, and it is indeed two 3s packs.
