Losi Xcelorin 2100kv weird noise? - 08.26.2010, 08:03 AM

I just bought 2 used motors, and one of em was a Losi Xcelorin 2100kv. When I turn the rotor by hand, I hear this weird noise.. Best way to describe it is like scratching a wooden table with a hard object. (Use the backside of a pen and you will hear what I hear pretty much.)

Is this normal for this motor?

No - check bearings and rotor for damage...

I think the back bearing is bad. I'm not sure how to check bearings for damage, but it seems very loose and when I move it the rotor moves sideways a bit.

But how do I open it? I unscrewed all the screws, tried tapping back and front lightly on the table, but nothing will come out. I don't want to use any force until I find out exactly where to use it.

I tried looking up youtube for guides, but nothing.. ?

It's just impossible to open! I emailed Horizon to ask for support, but they just told me to get the measures of the bearings and buy some. But I need to open it up in order to check it.

hi,

no problem at all. you can't remove the rear endbell, only the metal cover. loosen the 3 screws of the back. then you loosen the screws of the front endbell.

then, you either push the axle on the rear endbell to loosen the front, or pull it on the front. to finally get the magnet out of the can, you need probably a gripper.

have a look at the carbon or kevlar bonding, if everything is ok. if there is a little damage, you can fix it with super glue.

then you push both bearings, and replace them. the both fit very firm. when you replace the front bearing, push it in carefully, take something to push it in, just touch the outer ring of the bearing (don't damage it).

to get the rear bearing in, is a bit tricky. the front bearing is a 16x8x5mm, the rear a 14x8x4 mm.

some more details on the motor:

good luck

Very nice. Thanks a lot!

But who can I email about replacing the motor? I've already asked horizon. They simply said they didn't supply bearings and I needed to buy bearings (2 email total.).

why would you need to replace the motor? the front bearing is a rc-standard size (diff, wheels). you get both bearings where you get bearings or rc-stuff.

before re-assembling, clean the motor inside.

Cause it's impossible to open.. I've tried, my father tried. Used a vice grip thingie even and pulled the rotor, and tried to press the backside out too. Nothing. Didn't even budge.

You bought used motors, and ones a dud? Go figure- I'd talk to the person you bought it from...

That's not the issue though. I got this along with another motor very cheap, and I want to fix this.

have a hammer and slam it. you can also heat the front carefully, to loosen it. I don't think that the motor has been opend before, and that he glued something.

I have opened my xcelorins a couple of times, not easy, but finally worked.

Oh? I thought about heating it up, cause it feels like the previous owner glued the front end or put loctite on it, but I thought it would definately ruin it.

But, I will try it now. Thanks man. :)

u're welcome. That's a good idea to heat up the front, right at the endbell/can. and than you can "slam" the axle, of course carefully. It's always a little strange, opening a motor like that, but in most cases it has to be like that.

cheap brushless motors you can slam on the table, and the rear endbell pops off, but that won't work for this motor.

otherwise you put some m4 screws into the front endbell; then you take a long, slim pliers (like electricians have) and grip those screws (the axle can turnloose), put it to the edge of a table, and slam with a hammer on the axle. like that you kinda pull the endbell out of the can. very hard to describe with my english-scills... don't think thant anybody understands that...

Hehe. :) But I finally opened it! Woow! But it looks quite dirty and rusty. Is this usable?

And you mentioned regluing the kevlar thingie. How do I get that stuff out?

hurraayy

cool thing is, the rotor/carbon fiber is not damaged, as far as I can see. My kevlar bonded losi got damaged by sand, so I put some thin super glue on it. like that the damage didn't get worse. I don't think that this has to be done here.

just clean it, with e.g. break cleaner. I always took some kitchen-anti-grease cleaner, rinsed it with water, and dryed it CAREFULLY. but I don't know if I can recommend it like that, but it worked for me.

you can get rid of rust with e.g. vinegar or so (light acid). I assume, that rust is not good for the function of the magnets. but don't take too hefty stuff, don't damage the coating of the wires!! e.g. you can take cleansing alcohol, that should be fine.

it seems that the motor got completely wet, because the bearings and the insides are rusty. But I think it's not a problem to fix it, besides the dust it looks good.

when you have redone the motor, you have to seal the not used holes of the font endbell, and you could dustproof the rear metal cap (to prevent the rear bearing from dust). and use some loctite (medium) for the screws.

You can go for ceramic bearings, if you want, or at least have yourself some quality stuff.
