Which Motor and ESC - 05.09.2007, 10:49 PM

I'm looking at getting Feigao 8xl and a quark esc. Do I need to get the 125 or will the 80 and the 65 work too? I'm trying to do this on a relatively tight budget and would prefer the cheaper esc if it will be reliable and able to take the power of 14 cells. (GP3300) I would rather spend my money on the more expensive one then get one that won't preform well in my Revo.

I'm putting this in a Revo with an E-Maxx tranny. Is the tranny pretty solid or are there some upgrades that I would have to make? Thanks for any replies. :)

If you are putting it in a Revo and using an 8XL, I would definitely go with the 125. The Quarks tend to run a bit warm (there is even a heatsink especially made for it in the store) so the added case area helps keep temps down. Plus, the 8XL can pull a substantial amount of current, and the 125 will handle that easier. Yeah, it's expensive, but worth it IMO - I have two of them.

Thanks. Are there any other ones that I should take a look at? I was directed over here by a few members on the BYT forums. I've been a member over there for over two years. Just got back into the hobby. ;)

Well, it depends on what you are looking for. The Quark is nice, but it does have limits. It is listed as being able to take 6s lipo, but experience from others here says it doesn't work well. But, it can take 5s lipo or 16 cells no problem. As I mentioned, it also heats up a bit. But, on the flipside, it is really silky smooth even at low speed and can run outrunner and multi-pole inrunner motors.

There are other ESC alternatives, such as the MGM and BK Warriors. Each has their own advantages/disadvantages. Then there's the small Mamba Max ESC, which is really nice for the money and is rated up to 100A. Very nice programming on the PC via USB and really small. If you were running a "cooler" motor (like a 9XL or higher) and 12 cells or 4s lipo, I would recommend that (even though some will say 14 cells is OK), as long as you use a small fan to cool it.

I don't think I'll be exceeding those limits anytime soon. Unless I get some cash from racing. (Mountain and road biking)

I notice you live in California. Where in CA is Orinda, if you don't mind me asking?

I've also got a Revo, but it's got my version of the "slipperential" (Revo slipper clutch + 1/8 center diff). It's running a Feigao 540C 7XL, Mamba Max ESC, and 5s2p A123 (16.5v 4600mah).

Would it be better to do it with the revo tranny? I have an E-Maxx and a revo to use parts from.

Orinda is in the east bay, right on the east side of the oakland hills.

Either way will work; I've done both. Once you mod the revo tranny (lock into 2nd, gear, do the FOC, remove 1st gear), it is lighter than the maxx tranny, and already has a solid slipper setup right out of the box. The maxx tranny needs a strobe setup, steel idler gears, etc. The Revo tranny also sits lower and allows a lower motor mounting position. The only downside (I guess) to using the Revo tranny is that the motor is on one side and the batteries are (usually) on the other. So weight balance may be a little tough.
