Gearing for street tires with Brushless Pede? - 06.11.2005, 10:37 PM

Currently I have Masher 2000s on my Pede with 21/84 gearing on the 8s I have. Current motor temp are about 145-150 after a 7 cell pack and the ESC stays around 120 or lower. According to this Gear Wizard, I need to go to 30/75 to keep the tire/gearing ratio the same. Does anyone make a 75 tooth spur that'll fit the Pede and have holes for slipper pegs?

I should note that tire diameters are 5.0 inches for the Mashers and 3.7 inches for the Road Hawgs.

I think Traxxas makes a 78 or 80 spur gear (maybe both), which will get you close.

Thanks Mike. I ran the same question by the guys over at RC Universe and they insist that I have it over geared with the Mashers and the current 21/84 gearing is the ideal gear set for the road hawgs, they say any higher than that with the hawgs and I'll have nothing but problems with thermaling.

It all depends on how you run. If your motor temps are only 140-150 and the controllers is below 120, you are safe with the gearing you have. If you run in grass or other high draw terrain, you may want lower gearing, but your temps are well within the safe range.

The gear wizard may say this but that is way overgeared with a pede no matter what tires you use. The weight of the pede is a real factor which the wizard doesn't account for. When I do speed runs in my bandit(with a lehner 5300 and 9918 controller) it is usually geared 30/72. That gearing in a bandit really gets the motor hot after just a few passes and this is in a bandit with buggy size tires on 8 cells usually.

Ya never know maybe your controller and motor will handle it but I doubt it. I would start at 25/84 and work from there.

EDIT:
Here is the spur gear I use for those runs.
