Im going to replace the bearings in my feigo 9xl. Im doing this to help extend the life of my motor. Has anyone thought of using ceramic bearings or are the steel bearings better for this application ?. And what is this side load i hear about & how will it affect the bearings ?.

I think offshore has the ceramic bearings as a direct replacement...

They will preform better and last longer. And cost more. there are differnt grades to look for, but I don't remember what they are. You probably want metal races with the ceramic balls.

Hyperasas uses them in his Lehners. They last a lot longer than the steel ones but they cost more. Dirt has a harder time getting into the bearings themselves.

I changed out a set in a 540c 9XL using the ceramics from offshore electrics. The motor was bought used and when received, brgs felt gritty. The end with the removeable bell was easy to change, but the other end, the drive end was not, it was a pia. I never ran it with orig brgs, but it turns smoothly now and seems to run fine.

Time will tell if it makes motor last longer. Bottom line - I needed to replace brgs anyway, didn't want to replace with stock ones.

You will probably want at least ABEC 3 but preferably ABEC 5. Not all bearings are created equal. You may find ceramic bearings that are cheap but that doesn't mean they are any good. I have linked a page HERE which explains the ABEC ratings. You could also google ABEC and find more info.
Basically because of the high rpm of the motors we use, if you use a bearing with large tolerances you will create unnecessary vibration which = motor fatigue and loss of power.

I put a set of Boca ceramics in my dual 7XL Maxx. Actually just in one of the motors. Temps were identical and the ceramic bearing motor actually came to a stop first. Not worth the money in my opinion.
Oh yah, got a set of ceramics for sale if any ones interested.
