castle motor temps?

Question castle motor temps? - 12.06.2008, 05:49 PM

Well I have been out running my e-revo today with the castle combo in it. I wanted to know if 175*f is to hot for this motor(checked it at the 14min mark). Its 45*F outside . I have it geared 22/65 with losi super bolt-on tires( a hair more than 6 3/8'' diameter ). Running on 4s 6000mah 25c enerlands. Truck weighs in at 10 pounds 13 oz full rtr. I did have it geared 22/62 and it was 172*F after 10min (38* outside). The lipo got at the hottest 130*F

So is my setup ok and will I be able to run it like this in the summer? Also are my temps ok?

Forget to add the mmm's fan was on when I checked the temps on all my runs ( all after about 10mins of running in just the yard[ its all flat ]) but couldnt get the tempgun to tead over 105

Timeing is on low, punch set to 70%, inital start power set to low also if that helps. No throttle or brake curves and brakes set at 40% and reverse set to 60%

Thats really weird. That motor shouldn't get over 130F.

I ran a Tekno 1.5D in mine, which is a hotter motor, and the hottest I could get it on a 90 degree day was 145. I would say judging by the fact your motor and lipos were hot you may have some binding somewhere.

me too ive got this motor and i run-it on 6 cell lipo...never pass 157f after 20 min.....so 178f on 4 cell something wrong in this set-up..

Have you tried lowering your gearing? The definition of overgeared is an overheating motor.

22/65 is fine, and 22/62 is what I ran without issue. Getting as hot as it is there's a different problem than gearing.

If I undo the motor the drivetrain is smooth as silk??? I will check everything again today. I dont know why she is getting so hot( its geared for 38 or 39mph)

I know I have bigger / heavier tire but I thought it should still run cool if I compansated with the gearing

I really think its more about how you drive. I have two E revos. one has a medusa and the other a NEU 1515 1y. Bolth geared for around 38. I see temps around 168 on bolth trucks after a hard 15 minute run and its 40 outside.
If you run non stop and constantly accelerate and use allot of the motor brakes then yeah its gonna get warm.
I allways thought my setup was wrong or something but untill you run two trucks side by side and get two different results I would say its driving style.
If you run in a an open field with allot of wide oper running your temps will stay very cool...... Acceleration and hard brakeing = Heat.


Sometimes gearing lower makes the motor hotter. Ive proved this to myself allot. Reason is that when you gear it so high you use less throttle cause the truck is so much faster. When you geared for 40 or less you find yourself allways in the throttle cause its more controlable. These motors have so much torque I think they actually like higher gearing and less throttle input.


Anyone else notice that gearing really low can heat up a motor just as much as over gearing? kinda weird

Oh yeah and the tires might be hurting you also. Even if you gear lower for heavier tires you still gotta get those big flywheels turning. Maybe try smaller lighter tires geared for your target 39 mph and see how it affects temps

If you got a 20 tooth pinion around you could test it.
Sounds like a good amp draw if batts are heating up as well.

There is for sure something funny going on there. My MMM on my 7xl geared for 42mph right now doesnt even come close to turning the fan on on my MMM. You really should get a wattmeter or some type of device to test current flow. Given all your temps it seems you are pulling quite a bit of current through there.

The only thing I can come up with is that maybe your tires are playing a factor but Dragon beat me to it.

My 7xl is about about 130 deg in 55 degree weather right now with no active cooling.

If you still have the stock tires on try them and see how your temps are. It's def not under geared if your lipos are getting to 130*, that's a good indication of overgerared. I would drop to a 20t pinion and check everything. If your running an actual cc/neu motor from what I've heard they do tend to run a bit hotter but Patrick has said that as long as they're below 200* they're fine

I have a 20 tooth pinion( I will try that) I also have the stock tires and will try that also.

All the runtime I am getting is 14 to 15 mins on the 6000 25c enerlands[hit the lvc set at 12.5v]. I guess I am driving alittle hard but not as hard as say racing! I guess I will have to regear [Dang I was really liking the speed]

Honestly with your Lipos getting that hot I'm guessing your way overgeared! Enerlands are the best out there and if they can't supply the power there's a problem elsewhere! Are you using the stock screws to mount your motor or did you use something else? If you used a longer screw you may be shorting out the windings in the motor. The motor temp isn't really an issue, Arct1k received some early release motors a few months ago and he said they did run a bit warmer than a genuine neu but patrick said not to worry unless you can boil spit on them! So if your under 200* your safe. I once went for some extreme gearing on my crt.5 to see how fast I could go, it wasn't that fast, I dropped the gearing back down and it was faster cause the battery could supply the current. You might be surprised that gearing down may help you. I would just try the stock tires first, there's about 1/2" difference which really affects the gearing. If that helps try the 20t and see what happens with each tire.
